Will Nintendo Switch Online NES Games be Playable Offline?

Nintendo Switch’s Online service is almost here. The much anticipated online service from everyone’s favorite Japanese video game developer launches on September 18, with Nintendo confirming that its eShop would be taken for three hours’ worth of maintenance from 5pm PT. Nintendo Switch Online will launch at 8pm PT, and players will no doubt want to get their hands on the company’s illustrious collection of NES titles. However, will there be an option to play the Nintendo Switch Online NES Games offline?

Nintendo Switch Online NES Games: Can I Play Them Offline?

Considering that the online service is, well, not an offline function, you wouldn’t think so. However, Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch Online NES Games will be playable offline to a degree. In their FAQ section about their online service, Nintendo have revealed that players will be able to play NES games offline for a week, but only if gamers “have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.”

What does this mean? If you want to keep playing the collection of Nintendo Switch Online NES Games, you’ll need to check in periodically to allow your Switch to determine if you still have a valid membership. This should be done once every 7 days, otherwise you’ll lose access to the library.

Nintendo Switch Online NES Games: What Games are Available to Play?

When the online system launches later today, you’ll have access to 20 Nintendo Switch Online NES Games. Classic games such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi will be available to play alongside many others. Nintendo plans to add further iconic titles to its back catalogue some way down the line, so make sure to keep checking back at Game Revolution for all the news on when these new additions will drop on Nintendo Switch.
