The next major PS4 update appears to be coming soon as beta sign-ups are now open. No official announcement has been made as of yet but the beta sign-up pages for North America and Japan are open. Unfortunately, PS4 owners in Europe will have to wait as their sign-up page has yet to open.
The upcoming PS4 update 6.00 will be a big one. Major PS4 updates usually have a beta test before the full release and the numbers end with either .50 or .00. Big PS4 updates usually bring in several new features. Previous updates have added communities, a quick menu, and Spotify. Smaller updates usually bring some quality of life fixes and improve the system’s performance.
While the beta pages for North America Japan are open, PS4 owners will have to wait a little longer before they can sign-up. The deadline for the beta sign-up is July 27, so you have little over a week to register for it. There is no date for the beta test itself but when more information is available, we will let you know.
There is currently no word on what will be included in the next PS4 update but people are already speculating that it will have some features that are related to PlayStation Now. In June, Kotaku reported that PS Now will allow games to be downloaded as part of the update. The downside to the report was that downloads would be limited to PS4 initially.
Could Sony be finally giving PS4 owners the ability to change their usernames? Will the next update allow PS4 players cross-play with other platforms? We can hope but at the moment these potential features are purely speculation and optimistic thinking.
