Halo TV Series Officially Announced by Showtime, Begins Production in 2019

There have been ongoing rumors of a Halo TV series for quite a while now. With the official reveal of Halo Infinite at the recent E3 2018, hype for the franchise is at an all-time high. Perhaps that’s why Showtime has officially announced a live-action adaptation of the iconic science fiction franchise on the silver screen, under the working title of simply “Halo.” The showrunner of the Halo TV adaptation will be Kyle Killen of Mind Games fame while Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt will be directing several episodes.

Halo TV Series: First Details

According to IGN, the Halo TV series will feature ten one-hour long episodes in its first season and will begin production in early 2019. Showtime describes the Halo TV series as “taking place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.”

President and CEO of Showtime Networks David Nevins said: “Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded. In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

The Halo TV series will be produced by Showtime, Microsoft, 343 Industries and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television. It will be distributed worldwide by CBS Studios International. No official release window has been revealed but it’s definitely an exciting time to be a Halo fan.

The Halo TV series isn’t the only major gaming property currently slated for a live-action TV adaptation. Netflix also has a Witcher TV series in the works. All of this spells great news for the future of games on TV. Now, how about a Star Trek-like Mass Effect TV series? In the meantime, rewatch the official reveal trailer for Halo Infinite below.
