Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones Delayed Until 2019

The other pirate sim plunder-‘em-up is getting a new release date. Ubisoft’s take on shivering your timbers, Skull and Bones has been delayed 2019 at the earliest, the studio has confirmed. Bad news for those sick of Sea of Thieves and wanted to head back onto the open water ASAP, but probably just enough time for the rest of us to get over eyepatch fatigue.

As revealed per Ubisoft’s 2017/18 financial report (and if you like numbers you can read it all in full here, god help you) Skull and Bones looked to always be sailing against the wind when it came to a 2018 release date, and so it proved: the game is now slated ‘for release in 2019-2020.’

If you’re seeing 2020 and getting ready to walk the plank then fear not. That’ll just be the upcoming financial year, which would mean you’re getting your inner Blackbeard on at March 2020 at the very, very latest.

Interestingly enough, it appears Ubisoft has fairly high hopes for Skull and Bones. In the report, it states The Division 2, The Crew 2 and “an unannounced franchise title’ *cough* Assassin’s Creed should rake in ’19 million units’. Adding Skull and Bones into the mix bumps that number up to a pretty impressive 23 million. 4 million units would put it par for the course alongside titles such as the Splinter Cell series. Pretty good going for a new IP, then.

The cynic in me can’t help but think that the title is getting as far away as possible from the sinking ship that is Sea of Thieves. It’s possibly the wisest thing Ubisoft can do, especially if a new Assassin’s Creed title *also* chooses to feature naval warfare, which isn’t an impossibility.

For now, then, put those peglegs away and hang up your hooks: Skull and Bones isn’t coming for at least another year.
