Finally, we can sleep: Super Mario Odyssey‘s producer has settled the longstanding debate regarding Toad’s scalp. It turns out that the giant mushroom thing situated on top of his head? Yep, that’s actually his head.
This may seem strange to the logically minded among you, who naturally assumed the mushroom-shaped object atop Toad’s bonce was a part of his anatomy, but over the years the suggestion has been bandied about that the polka-dotted structure was actually a hat.
This belief only grew when a clip was shared from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, which depicted Toad taking off the mushroom to reveal an egg-shaped head and a small tuft of hair.
Fortunately, Yoshiaki Koizumi has finally put an end to this debate once and for a while, with the Super Mario Odyssey dev addressing the topic in a recent Nintendo video.
“So that, as it turns out, is actually Toad’s head,” Koizumi said. “I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there’s something inside…”
Koizumi has concluded the mystery, then, but has potentially started another conspiracy — what is in Toad’s head? Is it another, small mushroom like a matryoshka doll? Unless the next 3D Mario game lets us decapitate the little guy, chances are we’ll never find out.
