Nintendo Switch Online Service Delayed Until Late 2018

The Nintendo Switch online service has been delayed until Fall 2018, with it now set to launch nearly a full year later than was originally planned.

Nintendo has remained quiet about the online service, which was scheduled to launch after the free trial period was made available around the release of Splatoon 2. However, on Nintendo’s Italian website the service is now slated for a Fall 2018 release, meaning that Switch owners still have a long time to wait before they get their hands on its new features.

Nintendo previously went back to the drawing board with its plans for the Switch’s online service, after many complained that its prospective features weren’t worth their asking price. With Nintendo having notable struggles in the past in regards to its approach to online play, the Switch’s offering really needs to hit it out of the park if it wants to convince Switch owners to pay a subscription fee.

At the time of this writing, Nintendo Switch Online is shaping up to be a more attractive package than it was when it was first announced. With a 12-month subscription costing just $19.99, subscribers will be able to download a bunch of classic games from Nintendo’s vast library as part of the service, while the Nintendo eShop will also feature exclusive deals for members. Online play for most Switch games will also be locked behind the subscription.
