Death Stranding

Death Stranding Trailer Shown at The Game Awards 2017

A new Death Stranding trailer dropped at The Game Awards 2017. With Hideo Kojima, Norman Reedus, and Guillermo Del Toro all acting as presenters tonight, it was obvious we’d see something new about Kojima Production’s latest game. The last time we saw the game was at last year’s The Game Awards, and while the new Death Stranding trailer seems a bit more cohesive, we still have a ton of questions.

Kojima is the master of misdirection when it comes to video game production, and now that he’s out from under Konami’s eyes, he’s cranked it up to ten with Death Stranding. We still don’t know a ton about the game. The plot will deal with the connection between life and death, and that it will be action-oriented. It uses the Decima engine which was used to beautiful effect in this year’s Horizon Zero Dawn (a nominee in several categories at this year’s The Game Awards), and Mads Mikkelsen, Norman Reedus, and perhaps Guillermo Del Toro will be providing their likenesses and motion capture for the game.

It seems that Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen will play the protagonist and antagonist respectively. However, give Kojima’s predilection for misdirection, I wouldn’t take any fact as a certainty right now. Given that the previous trailer had tanks with huge digestive tract looking organs pulsating on them, Guillermo Del Toro holding a capsule with a baby on it, and a very creepy Mads Mikkelsen controlling soldiers that look like they’re from World War 2 with some sort of neural connection.

Death Stranding is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming video games and this trailer only makes me want more. I hope that we won’t have to wait until the next The Game Awards to get more info and footage of the game. I love Kojima’s previous works, and I’m eager to see what he’ll do unfettered by the trappings of the Metal Gear universe.
