Nintendo’s Miiverse Shutdown Is Imminent, Farewell to an Adorable Platform

If you’ve ever sent someone a message on Miiverse or trolled someone on Wii U and 3DS, it’s time to pour one out for the adorable service, which has now been announced to be closing down worldwide across all platforms on November 7. Unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye to a service many of us enjoyed using, even if it was all for kicks or for trolling.

The servers will go down on November 7 at 10 PM PT or 1 AM ET on November 8, and from then on all functionality Miiverse had provided will be removed. You’ll no longer be able to create new posts, look at messages, or use any kind of in-game Miiverse features. But you won’t lose access to all your posts, at least if you act quickly. Nintendo will let Miiverse users download their post history by following the process outlined at the official Miiverse page from Nintendo.

The shutdown was originally announced on Twitter, and the affected games will include Mario Party 10, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. and more. In case you’re worried a particular game you use a lot will be shut down, you can check out a full list of titles that will be affected by the shutdown.

It seems like an almost unnecessary thing to shut down what’s arguably Nintendo’s only real social platform beyond Miitopia and the limited online functionality you get with several of its other games. For example, there’s a Miiverse-like communication system in Splatoon 2 that nearly mirrors its predecessor exactly.

But it makes sense that Nintendo should pivot to its forthcoming online service that debuts in 2018, which will cost $30 a year. In its current iteration it’s free to use.

Still, it’s hard not to feel a little sad that the Wii U and 3DS mainstay is being taken offline. It’s like saying goodbye to a little piece of history, and I for one am going to be a little upset.
