The countdown on BaldursGate.com has finally hit 00:00 and as we suspected Baldur's Gate is back. However, it isn't the next installment that RPG fans have been praying for. Instead, it's a re-release, and a damn big one.
The original Baldur's Gate, which won a handful of game of the year awards in 1998, is getting a big facelift and will be packaged under the name Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Not only will the game receive "significant" adjustments and tweaks to give it some modern love (apparently the source code is still intact), but it will include some new content made by none other than several original development team members.
In addition, EA Director Trend Oster posted the following on his Twitter account:
There will be two games. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition #bgee=BG+TotSC, bg2ee=bg2+ToB
So instead of just one classic award-winning RPG being resurrected, two are coming back for an invasion of massive proportions with expansions thrown in for good measure.
PC is the only confirmed platform thus far, but this quote leads me to believe that there's a strong possibility that the PS3 and Xbox 360 could be let in on the fun too. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is scheduled for a release this summer with Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition following at a later date.
