Sony Softly Announces Slimmer PlayStation 4 to Replace Existing Model

At the PlayStation Meeting, Sony has revealed a slimmer version of the PlayStation 4 which will eventually replace the existing PS4 model indefinitely.

As such, unlike the Xbox One S, this slimmer PS4 will be getting its own name, instead arriving in just a week on September 15 for the low prices of $299. President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Andrew House says that it will "have all the same components that have made the PS4 the best platform of gaming."

The slimmer model will have rounded corners and will replace the glossy-half of the original console, released in November 2013, for a full-matte look. While it does have redesigned power and eject buttons, the lack of an optical port may pose issues, like those with Astro Headsets (like yours truly).

It also will not support Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, 4K streaming, and HDR, which Xbox One S and PS4 Pro will have. The retail bundles for the PS4 model will also come with the newly-designed DualShock 4. A teardown video of the PlayStation 4 Slim was posted yesterday by Links-Tech.
