Past Amiibo Could See New Life, Says Iwata

Did you miss Marth? Wistfully wanting Wii Fit Trainer? If vying for Villager or racing for Rosalina didn't go your way, you may not be out of the game just yet. Satoru Iwata, CEO and President of Nintendo, announced that some amiibo may see re-releases due to popularity and scarcity in a financial results briefing yesterday.

Iwata said that Nintendo would “consider additional production in cases such as when an amiibo figure sells out shortly after launch, an amiibo is indispensable to play a certain game, and when we receive a lot of requests for an amiibo figure from consumers and retailers.”

“We had already shipped 5.7 million units worldwide by the end of last year,” announced Iwata. "Amiibo is performing especially well in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Some figures are sold out and are being sold at online auctions at premium prices – something which none of us had predicted.”

For those amiibo not lucky enough to see a re-release, Iwata said they could still be acquired in card form. Nintendo had previously discussed alternatives to discontinued amiibo in December when the studio announced that some characters, such as the Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, would be discontinued when stock was depleted.

“In contrast to the current figure-shaped Amiibo available, we will make Amiibo in the form of cards this year as one of our future plans as Mr. Miyamoto mentioned at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in October,” Iwata said in the briefing.

At this time, there is no word as to which amiibo will return in figure form and which will become cards, or if they will at all.
