Borderlands 2 Working on Cloud Saves

Randy Pitchford, President and CEO of Gearbox Software, sounded off on all things Borderlands 2 in an interview with Game Informer. Most of it was the standard spiel on what to expect, with several teases of the new character classes, but then he dropped an almost silent bombshell on the prospect of cloud saves:

Borderlands 1 saved your content locally. We’re doing some things we hope on all platforms that allow you to save your content on the cloud so that you never lose content and as long as you can access your account you can be at your friend's house or whatever and continue playing with your character. We have some more details to talk about there and some things to work out with that there but it's an objective we have.

As anyone who has played Borderlands knows, saving can be a tricky affair. For example, if you don't quit out before a host does during a multiplayer session, your progress won't be saved. What a hassle… Such a cloud system would work wonders (as it has for us in terms of saving our rough drafts), though this may mean that you won't be able to control and maintain your own save for the game on your hard drive or memory stick, if at all.

Furthermore, this means that Gearbox Software might be working with Microsoft and Sony to synchronize and develop their cloud save system. Microsoft indicated earlier that they were working on the capabilities of such a system to be ready some time next year, with possibly Borderlands 2 as their virtual guinea pig. As for the PC version, this might mean that Gearbox will have its own proprietary cloud-based save system, which might spoil the game for save modders if no saves can be made to the hard drive at all.
